Trends on Tuesday: Tablet and E-Readers

Americans using either an e-reader or a tablet rose from 18% in December of 2011 to 29% in January of 2012 according to PEW Research Center.

According to our January 2012 report on digital reading devices, the number of Americans owning either an e-reader or tablet jumped from 18% in December 2011 to 29% in January 2012. 41% of e-reader users are male, 58% female. Tablets slpit 49% men 51% women.

The demographics include some interesting trends.

  • 47% of all tablet users are between  30-49 compared to the 26% between 18-29 and 21% between 50-64.
  • E-readers age trends are similar: 43% between the ages of 30-49, 26% between 50-64, and 20% between 18-29
  • More than 2/3  of tablet and e-reader users identify themselves as white.

Other interesting demographic trends include the preponderance of high income and high education tablet and e-reader users.

These data and other like it show an increasing trend in tablet, e-reader, and overall mobile use in not only the up and coming generation, but also their parents and even their parent’s parents. Many presumptions can be made,  but only one is certain: mobile is here and here to stay.
